If you’ve woken up with itchy bite marks, or noticed a streaky, blistering rash that doesn’t look like a typical bite, you’ve likely run into one of two very different things: an ordinary insect bite, or the cane mite reaction that’s one of the more distinctive forms of Bali rash. Both are common and manageable once you know which one you’re actually dealing with — starting with the usual suspects.

Insect bites in the outdoor

Common Biting Insects in Bali

Mosquitoes are the most frequent culprit, leaving itchy, raised bumps that often show up in small groups. Sand flies (sometimes called midges or no-see-ums) are common near beaches at dusk and leave small, intensely itchy clusters, often around the ankles. Ants can also leave sharper, more localized bites, usually where you’ve been sitting or standing on the ground. All three are isolated, round marks — a useful contrast to what’s coming next.

What Are “Cane Mites” (Tomcat Beetles), and Why They’re Different

Despite the name, cane mites aren’t mites at all, and they don’t bite. The reaction, medically called dermatitis linearis, comes from a toxin released when a small rove beetle — often called a “tomcat” locally — is crushed or brushed against your skin, typically without you even noticing it landed. The beetles are drawn to light at night, which is why the reaction often shows up after an evening near an outdoor light source. Instead of an isolated bump, you get a red, streaky line that can blister, tracing wherever the beetle made contact.

Insect Bites vs. Cane Mite Reactions vs. Other Bali Rashes

The shape is the biggest clue — here’s how to tell the different causes apart at a glance:

Condition

Shape / Pattern

Key Clue

Insect bites

Isolated, round bumps

Itchy, often several at once

Cane mite reaction

Streaky, linear, can blister

Shows up after an evening near outdoor lights, no bite felt

Heat rash

Widespread small bumps

Not tied to any bite; flares with sweat and heat

Lime burn

Streaky, but tied to sun + citrus

Appears after tanning with citrus juice on skin

Contact dermatitis

Follows the shape of a product or material

Matches exactly where something touched your skin

The CDC‘s guidance on mosquito bite prevention is a good reference for the basic precautions that also happen to reduce cane mite encounters, since both are more active in the evening.

Home Care & Warning Signs

Treatment depends on which one you’re dealing with. For ordinary bites, a cold compress and an over-the-counter anti-itch treatment ease discomfort — just avoid scratching, which raises the risk of a secondary infection. For a suspected cane mite reaction, wash the area with soap and water as soon as you notice it, and avoid rubbing or scratching, which spreads the reaction further.

See a dermatologist if:

There are signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, or pus

A cane mite reaction is blistering extensively or covers a large area

You notice widespread hives or facial swelling — this needs urgent medical attention, not a routine appointment

A bite or reaction isn’t improving after about a week

Insect bite examination at Hydro Medical

How Hydro Medical Treats Insect Bites & Cane Mite Reactions

A dermatologist in Bali at Hydro Medical can confirm whether you’re dealing with an ordinary bite, a cane mite reaction, or something else entirely, then recommend treatment to calm the reaction and reduce infection risk, along with guidance on managing any marks left behind. Every consultation is private, and our team is fluent in English, with same-day appointments available across Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What’s biting me in Bali?

The most common culprits are mosquitoes, sand flies (especially near beaches at dusk), and ants. Each leaves a slightly different mark, but all typically show up as isolated, itchy bumps or small clusters.

What are “cane mites” or “tomcat bugs”?

Despite the name, these aren’t mites and they don’t actually bite. They’re a type of rove beetle that releases an irritant toxin when crushed against skin, causing a streaky, sometimes blistering reaction called dermatitis linearis — often without the person even feeling the beetle land.

Do cane mites actually bite you?

No. The reaction comes from a toxin released when the beetle is crushed or brushed against skin, not from a bite or sting. This is why the mark often appears in a line or streak rather than as an isolated bump.

How do I tell insect bites apart from a cane mite reaction?

Ordinary bites are isolated, round, and itchy. A cane mite reaction is usually streaky or linear, can blister, and often shows up after being outdoors at night near lights, since that’s when the beetles are most active.

Are insect bites in Bali dangerous?

Most bites are just itchy and go away on their own within a few days. Mosquito-borne illness does exist in Bali, so it’s sensible to use repellent, but the vast majority of bites are simply a skin irritation, not a sign of infection.

Should I worry about dengue or malaria from mosquito bites?

Standard travel precautions like using repellent and covering up in the evening are sensible. If you develop fever, body aches, or feel unwell after mosquito bites, it’s worth seeing a doctor rather than assuming it’s just a skin reaction.

Can I treat a cane mite reaction at home?

Washing the area with soap and water as soon as you notice it can help limit the reaction. Avoid rubbing or scratching, which can spread the irritant further across your skin.

Will the marks from a cane mite reaction go away?

Yes, though it can take a couple of weeks for the streaky redness or blistering to fully resolve, and some temporary discoloration can linger a bit longer while the skin heals.

When should I see a dermatologist instead of waiting it out?

If there are signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, or pus), the reaction is blistering extensively, or it isn’t improving after about a week. Widespread hives or facial swelling need urgent medical attention, not a routine appointment.

How can I prevent insect bites and cane mite reactions in Bali?

Use insect repellent in the evening, keep windows screened or closed at night, avoid sleeping with lights on near open windows (which attract cane mite beetles), and if one lands on you, blow it off gently rather than swatting or crushing it against your skin.

Waking up with a sudden high fever and intense body aches in a tropical climate can be alarming for any traveler. While many assume it’s just a seasonal cold, recognizing the symptoms of dengue fever in Bali early is essential for preventing serious complications like plasma leakage or severe dehydration.

Utilizing professional IV therapy in Bali during the early stages of a fever ensures that your body stays hydrated and stable while fighting off tropical infections in the comfort of your villa.

Expat dengue recovery in Bali

Flu or Dengue? Spotting the Critical Differences

In a tropical environment, it is easy to mistake the early signs of Dengue fever for a common flu or travel exhaustion. However, Dengue—often referred to as “breakbone fever”—typically presents with a high temperature that strikes abruptly.

This condition is often accompanied by intense pain behind the eyes and severe joint or muscle aches. When questioning whether IVs in Bali are safe, it is vital to choose providers who follow strict clinical protocols. If you notice a faint pink rash or persistent vomiting alongside a fever, it is crucial to seek a medical consultation early.

The Danger of Plasma Leakage and Dehydration

The primary danger of Dengue fever lies in a physiological phenomenon known as plasma leakage. During the infection, the virus causes the walls of your small blood vessels to become “leaky,” allowing the liquid part of your blood (plasma) to seep out into surrounding tissues.

Understanding the scientific benefits of hydration is vital here, as this leakage rapidly decreases the volume of fluid in your circulatory system. Because this process happens at a cellular level, simply drinking water is often insufficient to maintain the necessary blood pressure and organ perfusion required for a safe recovery.

Why Intravenous Hydration is the Medical Priority

Medical guidelines emphasize that maintaining fluid balance is the single most important intervention for managing Dengue symptoms. When oral intake is compromised by nausea or the speed of fluid loss, an intravenous approach becomes the clinical gold standard.

Volume Maintenance: IV fluids provide an immediate expansion of blood plasma volume, preventing the dangerous drop in blood pressure that leads to systemic shock.

Electrolyte Balance: High fevers and sweating deplete essential minerals; IV therapy replaces these electrolytes instantly to support heart and muscle function.

Gastric Safety: Many common painkillers like Ibuprofen or Aspirin are dangerous during Dengue because they increase bleeding risks. IV administration allows medical professionals to provide stomach-safe fever reducers effectively.

Safety and Early Intervention in Your Villa

The critical phase of Dengue often begins just as the fever starts to drop, making continuous monitoring essential. For travelers, the physical strain of traveling to a clinic while feeling weak can actually worsen dehydration.

Choosing the IV drip vs oral supplements route allows for an immediate shift in your physiological state without the stress of travel. This ensures you can manage the early stages of a tropical illness proactively while remaining in a stress-free environment, supported by licensed nurse supervision.

If you’d like a specialist monitoring your recovery in more depth, particularly through the critical phase, our internist-led dengue and typhoid care covers what that involves.”

Post-fever recovery in Bali

Conclusion

Early detection and aggressive hydration are the most effective ways to navigate the risks of tropical diseases safely. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), maintaining adequate fluid volume is critical to preventing the progression to severe Dengue. Hydro Medical provides professional IV drip in Bali services, delivering hospital-grade hydration directly to your doorstep to ensure your safety and peace of mind.

Once you’ve recovered, it’s worth discussing longer-term protection, a second dengue infection is often more severe than the first. Our dengue vaccine service is available at all our clinics.

TAKE NO CHANCES WITH HIGH FEVER.

Feeling symptoms of a tropical fever? Don’t wait for it to get worse. Our medical team provides professional screening and hydration directly to your villa for your safety and peace of mind.

High fever in a tropical environment is frequently dismissed as a severe flu or temporary heat exhaustion, yet in Bali, these symptoms often signal more serious clinical infections. Conditions like Dengue fever and Typhoid are endemic to the region and require precise medical intervention to prevent life-threatening complications. Accessing specialized internal medicine in Bali ensures that acute fevers are diagnosed with laboratory accuracy and managed under expert supervision.

Dengue and Typhoid symptoms in Bali

Dengue Fever: Monitoring the Critical Phase

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes that demands vigilant clinical monitoring, particularly as the initial fever begins to subside. Many patients mistakenly believe they are recovering when their temperature drops, but this often marks the beginning of the “critical phase” where the risk of plasma leakage and internal bleeding is highest.

A specialist internist in Bali closely tracks platelet counts and hematocrit levels to navigate this window safely, providing the necessary medical support to prevent Dengue Shock Syndrome.

Common Symptoms and Hidden Triggers

Tropical infections often share overlapping symptoms, making professional differentiation vital. Our clinical team identifies specific indicators to distinguish between these two common pathogens:

Dengue Indicators: Sudden onset of high fever (up to 40°C), severe pain behind the eyes, intense joint/muscle aches (breakbone fever), and a distinctive faint rash.

Typhoid Indicators: A “step-ladder” rise in temperature over several days, extreme lethargy, abdominal tenderness, and sometimes a coated tongue or “rose spots” on the chest.

The Overlap: Both can cause severe dehydration and systemic inflammation, which is why diagnostic certainty is required to differentiate them from chronic digestive issues or simple food poisoning.

Why Specialist Oversight is Mandatory

Managing tropical infections involves more than just symptom relief; it requires a sophisticated understanding of fluid dynamics and systemic inflammatory responses. At Hydro Medical, our specialists focus on several critical intervention areas:

Precision Fluid Resuscitation: Maintaining the delicate balance of hydration to support blood pressure without causing fluid overload during the Dengue critical phase.

Co-Infection Screening: Identifying dual infections, such as a patient suffering from both Dengue and Typhoid simultaneously, which significantly complicates recovery.

Organ Function Protection: Monitoring the liver and spleen for inflammation, ensuring that the body’s internal filtration systems are not overwhelmed by recurrent infections or existing vulnerabilities.

Longitudinal Recovery: Integrating your recovery data into your digital medical history to monitor for post-viral fatigue or long-term gastrointestinal sensitivity.

Advanced Diagnostics in Canggu & Seminyak

Rapid diagnosis is the most effective tool in managing tropical fevers before they escalate into emergencies. By incorporating advanced blood panels and infection screenings into our comprehensive medical check-ups, we help expats identify pathogens like Dengue (NS1) or Typhoid (Tubex) within hours.

Our clinics in Canggu and Seminyak are equipped to provide the specialist oversight needed to manage these infections effectively, reducing the likelihood of prolonged hospitalization.

Recover immediately after treatment

Conclusion

Why Proper Wound Care is Essential

The Risks of Neglecting Wound Care

Bali’s tropical climate and diverse terrain can increase the risk of infections from wounds. Neglecting proper wound care can lead to severe infections, prolonged healing times, and even more serious health issues. Simple cuts and scrapes can become dangerous if not treated correctly, especially in environments where bacteria thrive.

Common Wound Types in Bali

Cuts and Scrapes: From coral cuts to trekking mishaps, these are common injuries for travelers.

Insect Bites: Mosquitoes and other insects can cause wounds that require attention to prevent infection.

Blisters: Long hikes or wearing new shoes can lead to painful blisters.

Essential Wound Care Tips for Bali Travelers

Immediate Action Steps

Clean the Wound

One of the most critical steps in wound care is cleaning the wound thoroughly. Follow these steps to ensure proper cleaning:

Wash Hands: Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching the wound.

Rinse with Clean Water: Use clean, running water to flush out any dirt or debris.

Gentle Cleaning: If necessary, use a mild soap to clean around the wound, but avoid getting soap inside the wound itself.

Disinfect the Wound

After cleaning, disinfect the wound to kill any remaining bacteria:

Use Antiseptic Solutions: Apply an antiseptic solution such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide.

Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can damage tissue and delay healing, so it’s best avoided.

Protect the Wound

Once the wound is clean and disinfected, protect it to prevent further contamination:

Apply an Antibiotic Ointment: This helps prevent infection and keeps the wound moist for better healing.

Cover with a Sterile Bandage: Use a sterile bandage or gauze to cover the wound. Change the bandage daily or whenever it gets wet or dirty.

Ongoing Wound Care Practices

Monitor for Infection

Keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection, such as:

Redness and Swelling: Increased redness and swelling around the wound area.

Pus or Discharge: Yellow or green discharge coming from the wound.

Pain and Heat: Persistent pain or warmth around the wound site.

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Keep the Wound Moist

Maintaining a moist wound environment can promote faster healing:

Use Hydrocolloid Dressings: These dressings keep the wound moist and provide a protective barrier.

Apply Moisturizing Ointments: Products like petroleum jelly can also help keep the wound moist.

Preventative Measures

Protect Against Further Injury

Take steps to protect yourself from further injuries:

Wear Appropriate Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes can prevent blisters and cuts.

Use Insect Repellent: Protect yourself from insect bites by using a good quality repellent.

Be Cautious with Outdoor Activities: Exercise caution when engaging in activities like hiking or swimming.

Stay Hydrated and Healthy

Good overall health can support wound healing:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Eat a Balanced Diet: Nutrient-rich foods can aid in the healing process.

Get Enough Rest: Proper rest is crucial for your body’s recovery.

When to Seek Professional Help

Signs You Need Medical Attention

While many wounds can be managed with basic care, some situations require professional medical attention:

Deep or Large Wounds: Any wound that is deep, large, or caused by a dirty or rusty object.

Persistent Pain or Swelling: If the wound is not healing or is causing significant pain and swelling.

Signs of Infection: Any signs of infection, such as fever, increased redness, or discharge.

Surfing cuts and infections are a big deal…

They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems. Your surf trip will eventually become a nightmare if your reef cuts lead to infections that can adversely affect your overall health. The coral reefs throughout Indonesia contain unusual nasty bacteria and toxins. Foreign debris and coral spores embed themselves in the skin and tissue, acting as a source of infection, increasing pain, and inflammation, and preventing your wound from healing.

It’s a fact that reef cuts are one of the most difficult types of wounds to heal. Even the smallest, harmless-appearing reef cut or rash has a high chance of developing into a serious infection if not treated properly. We see it time and time again, surfers that are not properly prepared with reef cuts left ill-treated or in some instances untreated. Leading to an infection that not only puts a damper on your surf trip but can threaten your life. Considering your most common injury is going to be a reef cut or laceration, you have to be prepared for treating, cleaning, and bandaging basic wounds with the right kind of first aid kit when surfing reefs.

WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO NEED…

Irrigation Syringe

An irrigation syringe is a lightweight and easy tool to carry for the first step in disinfecting any wound. You should use an irrigation syringe, and not your bare hands when irrigating any reef cut to prevent the spread of bacteria and infections.

Bottled Water

Tap water in Indonesia is not clean and the ocean water at this temperature harbours a lot of bacteria so use bottled water to first irrigate your wound. Bottled water is conveniently available in stores all around Indonesia.

Soap Wipes

Used to clean around the wound. Carefully cover your finger with soap wipes to ensure that you don’t touch the surface of the wound.

Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes

To sterilise tweezers, scissors, the area around the wound and assisting adhesive bandages to make better contact with the skin. You can also use bottled isopropyl alcohol if available.

High Precision Surgical Tweezers

When you are treating wounds yourself you need all the help you can get and high precision tweezers with an elbow are the top of the line when it comes to easily and effectively removing foreign debris from your wounds. DON’T get stuck with plastic tweezers or cheap tweezers that you can’t get an accurate pinch from, you’ll cause yourself more pain and become extremely frustrated. Moreover, plastic or cheap tweezers aren’t always made from the best materials and using these in treating your reef cuts might only do more harm than good.

Scissors

Quality pair of stainless steel scissors to cut and shape adhesive tapes and bandages. Don’t forget to clean your scissors with alcohol before using them. A pair of high-quality scissors can be very useful when dressing cuts, which is why it’s best if you always include them in your first aid kit.

Razor

A razor enables you to shave the hair around the wound and keep the area clean assisting adhesive bandages to make better contact with the skin.

Wound Cleaning Sponge

Used to clean the wound thoroughly one last time to ensure any coral dust/spores are removed decreasing the likelihood of infection and delays in the healing process.

Saline Solution

Mimics your body’s internal pH and is used in the final step when irrigating the wound to provide the cleanest environment possible.

Triple Antibiotic Ointment

An effective formula that contains three active antibiotic ingredients to stop the growth of bacteria, prevent infection and reduce pain and inflammation. WARNING; commonly used topical antiseptics (lime, hydrogen peroxide, iodine and alcohol) actually damage the tissue and irritates the wound delaying the healing process.

Haemostatic Gauze

This revolutionary cellulose-based material accelerates the blood clotting process and is a must-have item in every surfing first aid kit. When the gauze comes in contact with blood it quickly transforms into a stiff gel, which fills wound voids, seals capillary ends and activates the clotting system saving you days or weeks of recovery time.

Adhesive Stretch Dressing

Wide area adhesive dressing that is especially suitable for use on frequently mobile and highly contoured parts of the body where most reef cuts occur. It provides a bacterial barrier that is permeable to air and water vapour with an excellent long term skin/wound friendly adhesion. It can be applied directly over the top of the wound with or without gauze and minimises any disturbances of blood circulation to speed up the healing process of reef cuts. Adhesive stretch dressings are some what the swains army knife of wound dressings when it comes to reef cuts.

HOW TO TREAT A REEF CUT…

Irrigate

You’re first step for any kind of cut, reef or otherwise, is to irrigate, loosening and removing any foriegn debris from the wound. Since the tap water in Indonesia is not clean use bottled water to first irrigate your wound flushing out as much foreign debris as you can. Save the saline solution for last unless you have a large supply of it.

Using an irrigation syringe irrigate the wound further for an extended period of time washing out as much bacteria as you can. Then clean around the wound with soap wipes. Coral contains a range of very nasty and unusual bacteria and toxins. Tiny coral cysts enter the wound and get embedded in tissue to not only cause wound healing delay, but pain and recurrent swelling for a long time. So naturally the first major rule is thorough, extended cleaning. The longer the better! Don’t do what we have seen a million times: “Oh, that’ll do mate.” No it probably won’t. Do it again, thoroughly.

Debride

Use tweezers (first sterilise the tweezers with alcohol wipes) to remove any foreign debris from the wound that still appear after washing. It is important to get any remains of the reef or coral dust out of the wound as mentioned above. Take your time doing this as thoroughly as possible, removing any dead skin with sterile equipment along the way. It is a major step to speeding up the healing process. We can’t stress this enough, do it right the first time, because once the swelling and infection sets in, it becomes increasingly difficult to remove foreign objects.

Remove Hair From Around The Wound

Use the razor to shave any hair around the wound in preparation for covering the wound. This greatly enhances how well any adhesive bandages stick to the skin, keeping the wound cleaner for longer and speeding up the healing process.

Clean With Wound Cleaning Sponge & Saline Solution

Fill the irrigation syringe with saline solution or simply use saline solution straight from the bottle and rinse the wound while lightly cleaning with a wound cleaning sponge.

Prepare The Area Around The Wound

Clean, dry and degrease the area around the wound with alcohol wipes. This not only rids of bacteria but dries the skin for applying an adhesive stretch dressing.

Protect The Wound

Treat the wound with a triple antibiotic ointment ensuring any remaining bacteria from the cleaning or debriding process doesn’t take root in your injury, preventing infection and assisting in relieving pain and inflammation. While commonly used antiseptics such as lime, hydrogen peroxide, iodine or rubbing alcohol into the wound does work to kill bacteria it also damages the tissue, irritates the wound and delays the healing process.

Active The Blood Clotting System

Use Hemostatic Gauze to control any remaining bleeding and active the blood clotting system. With scissors cut and shape the hemostatic gauze to shape to match the wound and apply directly to the wound with pressure. Hemostatic gauze is commonly used by armed forces and hospitals to address gunshot wounds. When the Hemostatic Gauze contacts with the wound it quickly transforms into a stiff gel, filling the wound, sealing capillary ends and activating the blood clotting system saving you days or weeks of recovery time.

Apply Dressing

Prepare an adhesive stretch dressing by cutting it to the length you need, then cutting it to the desired shape and apply it directly over the top of the wound and/or hemostatic gauze when the area around your wound is completely dry. Hot tip: round the corners of the dressing with scissors so there are no corners that may start to peel back off the skin.

Reduce The Swelling

Raise the limb. Swelling, even if you can’t see it, can delay healing, especially in areas of poor circulation. Keep your arm or leg up to the level of your heart or higher in the first few hours.

Monitor The Area Around Your Wound For Infection

This is indicated by red spreading edges around the wound which can lead to fever, severe illness and even death. If you see this, you need urgent medical help. Do not delay even if you are in a remote place — you will need antibiotics or change to a different antibiotic if you are on one already. Get some medical advice even if it’s on the phone to work out which antibiotic is best and assess your condition if you’re getting ill and febrile.

Seek urgent medical attention if…

The wound is large or deep.

The edges of the wound do not stay together.

It is not possible to clean the wound properly or remove all debris.

Symptoms of infection occur (fever, increasing pain or redness, or discharge from the wound).

If blood is spurting from the wound or if applying pressure to the wound does not stop the bleeding!

Avoid Reef Cuts When Possible

Reef cuts can be challenging to treat, which is why you should exert effort to avoid such wounds whenever possible. This is especially important if you’re fond of spending time at the beach and in the surf.

If you like to explore reefs when you’re not surfing investing in and wearing some water aerobics shoes is one way of avoiding reef cuts out of the surf in the future. Wearing a dive suit and maintaining a respectful distance from the reefs can also help whenever possible.

The initial contact of a bite may be painful. It’s often followed by an allergic reaction to venom deposited into your skin through the animal’s mouth or stinger. The appearance can vary. Whether you’re in the water, on a mountain trail, or in your backyard, wildlife you encounter have ways of protecting themselves and their territory.

Insects, such as bees, ants, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, and wasps, and arachnids, such as spiders, ticks, and scorpions, may bite or sting if you get close. Most of these animals won’t bother you if you don’t bother them, but knowing what to look for is key.

Most bites and stings trigger nothing more than minor discomfort, but some encounters can be deadly, especially if you have severe allergies to the animal’s venom.

A severe allergic reaction can happen with any bug bite or sting, depending on the person. Venom allergies may cause a dangerous, severe allergic reaction in some people, resulting in swelling, generalized itching, and difficulty breathing.

Prevention is the best medicine, so knowing how to recognize and avoid biting and stinging insects or arachnids is the best way to stay safe. The animals you should recognize and understand depend very much on where you live or where you’re visiting. Different regions of the United States are home to many of these creatures. The season also matters. For example, mosquitoes, stinging bees, and wasps tend to come out in full force during the summer.

The form a bite takes depends on what type of animal bit you. Take a look at the photos below to help identify which animal may have caused your bug bite.

Mosquito bites

A mosquito bite is a small, round, puffy bump that appears soon after you’ve been bitten. The bump will become red, hard, swollen, and itchy. You may have multiple bites in the same area.

Fire ant stings

Fire ants are small, aggressive, red or black venomous ants that bite and then deliver painful stings. Stings appear as swollen red spots that develop a blister on top. Stings burn, itch, and last up to a week.

Flea bites

Flea bites are usually located in clusters on the lower legs and feet. The itchy, red bumps are surrounded by a red halo. Symptoms begin immediately after you’re bitten.

Bedbug bites

The itchy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to the bedbug bite. The small rashes have red, swollen areas and dark red centres. Bites may appear in a line or grouped together, usually on areas of the body not covered by clothing, such as the hands, neck, or feet. There may be very itchy blisters or hives at the bite site.

Fly bites

Painful, itchy rashes are caused by an inflammatory reaction at the site of the fly bite. Though usually harmless, they may lead to severe allergic reactions or spread insect-borne diseases. Take precautions when traveling to endemic countries by wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants and by using bug spray.

Lice bites

Head lice, pubic lice (“crabs”), and body lice are different species of parasitic lice that affect humans. They feed on blood and cause an itchy immune reaction at the site of their bites. Adult lice are gray/tan six-legged insects about the size of a tiny sesame seed. Nits (eggs) and nymphs (baby lice) can only be seen as very tiny specks that may look like dandruff.

Chigger bites

Painful, itchy rashes may be caused by an immune response to the bites of tiny mite larvae. Bites appear as welts, blisters, pimples, or hives. Bites will generally appear in groups and are extremely itchy. Chigger bites may be grouped in skin folds or near areas where clothing fits tightly. Chiggers tend to jump from grass, so bites are usually on legs near the tops of socks.

Tick bites

Bites can cause pain or swelling at the bite area. They may also lead to a rash, a burning sensation, blisters, or difficulty breathing. The tick often remains attached to the skin for a long time. Bites rarely appear in groups. Ticks can transfer diseases, including Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis.

Scabies

Symptoms caused by scabies mites may take 4 to 6 weeks to appear. The extremely itchy rash may be pimply, made up of tiny blisters, or scaly. They may cause raised, white, or flesh-toned lines.

Spider bites

This condition is considered a medical emergency, and 911 or local emergency services should be contacted. Urgent care may be required. Most spiders don’t pose a threat to humans, and in such cases, their bites are harmless or mildly irritating like a bee sting. Dangerous spiders include the brown recluse, black widow, funnel web spider (Australia), and wandering spider (South America). A single raised papule, pustule, or wheal may appear at the site of the bite followed by redness and tenderness. The bite will appear as two small puncture marks. Severe allergic reactions to a spider bite may require medical attention.

Brown recluse spider bite

This is a shy, brown- or tan-coloured spider with a violin-shaped patch and six paired eyes, two in the front and two sets of two on either side of the head. It likes to hide in quiet, dark places like closets and bookshelves and is native to the South and South Central regions of the United States. Nonaggressive, it will only bite humans if it’s being crushed between skin and a hard surface. Redness appears with a central, white blister at the site of the bite. Moderate to severe pain and itching at the site of the bite occurs 2 to 8 hours after the spider has injected its venom. Rare complications include fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting, hemolytic anemia, rhabdomyolysis, and kidney failure.

Black widow spider bite

This condition is considered a medical emergency, and 911 or local emergency services should be contacted. Urgent care may be required. This spider is plump, black, and shiny, with an hourglass-shaped red mark on its abdomen. It’s nonaggressive and will only bite if it’s being crushed. Bites cause muscle pain and spasms in the arms, legs, abdomen, and back.

Tremor, sweating, weakness, chills, nausea, vomiting, and headache are other symptoms. The bite area is red with a white centre.

Hobo spider bite

The venom of this common household spider isn’t considered toxic to humans. Bites are generally harmless and cause only minor pain, swelling, and sometimes muscle twitches.

A single red area appears with a tender central nodule. Itching, burning, or stinging may occur at the site of the bite.

Wolf spider bite

This large (up to 2 inches long), fuzzy, gray/brown spider is native to many parts of the United States. Nonaggressive, it will bite if it feels threatened. A tender, itchy red bump appears that heals in 7 to 10 days.

Horsefly bites

These large (1-inch long) blood-sucking flies are most active in the daylight hours. An instant, sharp burning sensation occurs when a horsefly bites. Itchiness, redness, swelling, and bruising may also occur at the bite location.

Bee stings

Pain, redness, swelling, or itching occurs at the site of the sting. A white spot appears where the stinger punctured the skin. Unlike bumblebees and carpenter bees, honeybees can only sting once due to their barbed stinger that can remain in the skin.

Most bites and stings heal by themselves after several days of mild discomfort.

Monitor the affected site for signs of infection. Contact a doctor if the wound appears to be getting worse or hasn’t healed after several weeks. Bites and stings that cause severe reactions can be fatal if they aren’t treated immediately. Once you’ve experienced a severe allergic reaction, a doctor will likely prescribe an epinephrine auto-injector. Epinephrine is a hormone that can prevent anaphylactic shock. Carry the auto-injector with you at all times to reverse the reaction immediately following a bite or sting.

Use caution when near nests or hives containing aggressive insects. Hire professionals who have the proper safety equipment to remove a nest or hive.

When spending time outside, take preventive measures, such as: wearing hats and clothing that provide full coverage, wearing neutral colours and avoiding floral patterns, avoiding perfume and scented lotion, keeping food and drinks covered, using citronella or insect repellent, and using permethrin on clothing to prevent black-legged tick bites

No matter how careful we are, cuts happen, wounds occur! Surfers get cuts from the reef, especially with Bali`s shallow shores.Divers may get coral cuts, even though you are not supposed to touch the corals! But also on Balis roads you can get scratches from scooter accidents – Bali cuts and open wounds happen quickly.

Always take it seriously

We all get told about the “healing magic” of the ocean, it shouldn’t be a problem to continue what you love and continue playing in the ocean. In Bali though, this is different. As quickly as they come, the longer they take to disappear. And most of the time wounds and cuts get swollen, become red, and may develop into a festering sore or ulcer with a pustular drainage. Open wounds get easily infected here!

Okay, but how to deal with open wounds in Bali?

Control the bleeding, put direct pressure on the open wound.

Make sure you are generating enough pressure to debride the wound from any possible foreign bodies.

Clean it: Normal saline or bottled water should be used, do not use sea or tap water.

Disinfect it as quickly as possible.

Ensure that particles and dirt are completely removed.

When riding a scooter, protect the wound to prevent that dirt is coming into the wound!

Do not swim and also take care when showering that no water gets into the wound.

After thorough irrigation, add an antiseptic, the easiest in Bali is Betadine. You get it for around 20.000 IDR in Pharmacies and Supermarkets. This usually leads to the wound drying up.

Info: Learn more about which medication you should bring to Bali! follow this link http://hydromedbali.com/five-most-common-holidays-mini-accidents-you-will-get-in-bali-and-what-to-do-when-they-happen/

Honey

Scientists believe the antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals in honey kill both the bacteria and the fungi that infect wounds. Its viscous texture also allows a cut to heal in a moist environment, which leaves you with a softer- looking scar or no scar at all. Make sure you use raw honey to dress your wound (honey from supermarket won’t have the same effect).

honey-natural-healing-open wounds in bali

Coconut oil

(Yes – This is magical in many ways!) It heals cuts too, it has amazing antibacterial and antifungal properties and can even prevent scarring of open wounds too! Use coconut oil on your wound to help speed recovery – apply coconut oil under a band-aid and change it 2-3 times a day.

coconut-oil-natural-healing open wounds in bali

Chamomile

The flower’s healing properties come from its flavonoids and essential oils, which scientists have found can penetrate deep into the skin. Make a chamomile press for your wound by soaking some chamomile tea bags in water, lightly draining some of the liquid, and then wrapping these tea bags around your wound.

chamomile-natural-healing-open wounds bali

Why open wounds in Bali heal slower than anywhere else?

The answer is simple. Due to the high humidity and other conditions, such as dust or insects trying to keep the wounds open. Wound healing in the tropics is worse than in non-tropical areas. Besides, the temperature of the water here in Bali allows more bacteria to be alive. The water is basically too warm to support the wound healing. A million of microscopic organism live in just one millilitre of seawater. Seawater also contains micro bacteria which varies in kinds and benefits.

What to do if the wound is already infected

Now it’s time to go to the doctor. In some cases, you need to take antibiotics for a few days to avoid a worse infection and a sepsis. Change the bandage every two days and clean it carefully. You can use solid water compresses and also put some antibiotic cream on. Don’t let any dirty water come into the wound. In Rainy Season you should cover the bandage with a plastic bag when being outside. Keep watching it and only keep it open when you can see a crust.

What`s the worst case scenario?

Sea Ulcers. A common problem among surfers, sailors, and other seafarers. Sea ulcers typically develop from seemingly minor scrapes or cuts; then, instead of healing shut like most wounds, they deepen and become encircled by a thick, rubbery kind of callous. And there they stay for weeks, months, even years, never looking particularly infected, but just never healing.

In any case: Please please please stay out of the water

It is probably the hardest thing to do here on Bali, especially if you are here for only a couple of days. But hygiene is very important. Ocean or pool water is not a sterile environment, especially in tropic areas like Bali. Bacteria will enter your open wound and wreak havoc. Stay calm, stay safe, and just take a sit back enjoying the sunset.
