Nusa Penida is an island southeast of Indonesia’s island Bali and a district of Klungkung Regency that includes the neighbouring small island of Nusa Lembongan.
The Badung Strait separates the island and Bali. The interior of Nusa Penida is hilly with a maximum altitude of 524 metres. It is drier than the nearby island of Bali. There is very little tourist infrastructure. There are two small islands nearby – Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan – which are included within the district (kecamatan). Administratively, the kecamatan of the same name, had a population of 45,178 in 2010 census, covering 202.8 km2, very little changed from 10 years prior.
Nusa means “island” and Penida means “priests” in Balinese. Therefore, isn’t necessary to refer to the island as “Nusa Penida Island” – it would just be redundant. The island is known to local Balinese as the black magic island.
Long before it became a tourist attraction for its natural beauty, Nusa Penida was once believed by locals to be inhabited by dark spirits, banished to the island by the priests of Bali. However, even with such negative connotation Nusa Penida remains an important religious destination.
This is because Bali’s spiritual belief dictates balance in the universe, in which both good and evil are necessary. Nowadays, Nusa Penida is known mostly for Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach, but you can still visit temples where the dark spirit is worshipped – and kept at bay. I will elaborate more on that below.
On vacation, there are those who want to get peace, also some who want to feel the adventure. But, if you want to experience both of it you can visit Peguyangan Waterfall, Nusa Penida, Bali.
But please remember, this waterfall is not suitable if you’re afraid of altitude. Operating since 1995, the water of Peguyangan Nusa Penida Waterfall falls into the open sea. Above the waterfall, there is a unique gate that is usually used as a spot to take pictures for tourists. So this place is popular among young people who want to hunt photos for pre-wedding.
The beauty of the background photos that you take will be decorated by cliffs and greenery, as well as waterfalls of course.
In the southeast coast of Nusa Penida, Peguyangan Waterfall sits at the bottom of some pretty epic cliffs. It’s one of the less publicized things to do on Nusa Penida but one of my personal favorite. An iconic blue stairway leads you down a cliffside pathway to a sacred water temple, a pilgrimage site for locals.
If you choose to visit Peguyangan Waterfall, you will have lots of fun in the fresh air and its natural environment. The surroundings of this waterfall are not as busy as the waterfalls found on the island of Bali, so you can enjoy your solitude and the tranquillity. Nusa Penida Island is located not far from Bali and can be reached by fast boat or ship.
Around the waterfall, there is clear, fresh, healthy spring water. This spring is also considered sacred by the local people. You can drink and wash your face in the spring. Besides springs, you will also find a natural pool near the cliff directly adjacent to the edge of the cliff. You can enjoy the panorama of the open sea while swimming in the pool.
There is also a temple there which is often used for prayer and also religious ceremonies. As mentioned above, you can get a calm and peace atmosphere among the natural beauty at the Peguyangan Waterfall in Nusa Penida. Well, how about the adventure? Yup, you can get it on the way to this place!
The accommodation is quite spread out on Nusa Penida so it’s hard to guess where you might be based. Nonetheless, the map below has an accurate pin to help guide you. The drive to Peguyangan is on a nice road for most of the way but it does end with 10-15 minutes of bumpy, potholed gravel roads.
The roads are improving very quickly throughout Nusa Penida as tourist traffic increases but if you are a novice scooter driver this is gonna be an interesting journey for you! A motorbike costs a little bit more than on Bali mainland. We got ours for 70,000 rupiah per day with a full tank of gas. It wasn’t deal of the year but don’t expect to haggle down to 40,000 rupiah like you might manage on the streets of Canggu or Kuta. If you are staying in Bali.. but still want to spend a day experiencing how epic Nusa Penida is, you can take a day trip on a speedboat to Penida and tour around the sights for the day with a guide before returning back to Bali in the evening.
If you want to go on the 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour, you will need to be physically prepared and as fit and healthy as possible, as some tourist attractions are rather difficult to access, with uneven terrain, which is the case when visiting Peguyangan Waterfall. To get there you will need to climb at least 870 steps; because it is located beside cliffs and overlooks the open sea, the road to it is quite steep.
Although it is exhausting, your efforts will be immediately rewarded when you see its natural beauty. There you will find a number of water pipes because the waterfall has been used as a source of clean water for the people who live in the area since 1995. The cliffs, green trees and rocks that surround the clean waterfall are sure to mesmerize you. You will never forget your trip to Peguyangan Waterfall on the cheap Nusa Penida Tour Package.
In addition to the scenery at the waterfall, you will witness the beauty of the ocean next to it, the movement of the waves, and the flow of water into the open sea. It is a natural panorama that is a perfect antidote to the city.
This waterfall is considered sacred by the people of Bali because under it is a temple and a natural pool that are located near the cliff. However, you can swim as much as you want and enjoy the clean water and fresh air. If you love to write or compose songs, this waterfall is the right place for you, a place of inspiration.
You can also take pictures of every moment you spend there. With a backdrop of the waterfall or the open sea, your photos are sure to impress when you upload them to Instagram. If you want to stay within your budget while you’re travelling, just choose the 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour Package.
Besides of the place, we have to know what we need to prepare before start to go to nusa penida to see the beautifulness of the island. Here we give you some stuffs that you need to bring for travelling.
All the things you need to combat that strong sun in Bali – A hat, Sunscreen (at least SPF50!), and Sunglasses. If you are biking, wear a thin layer with sleeves that can be removed. A thin cotton scarf/sarong wrap – I love this because they are versatile! you can wear it around your neck and shoulder to protect yourself from the sun, but can also double up as something to sit on while you are at the beach.
Sufficient Cash – there are hardly any ATM or places that take credit card here, so you need enough to last the entire time you’re on the island. Bathing Suit – once you see how clear the water is in this part of the world, you’d want to jump in.
Trust me. Suitable Footwear – You need good walking shoes for the treks, but you’d probably want to wear flip-flops while at the beach. So bring both if you can! 4G Local SIM Card – If you don’t already have one, it’s always a good idea to have 4G SIM Card while in Bali. Coverage was pretty good in Nusa Penida too! Although it got a bit spotty as you go inland, I was still able to navigate using Google Maps and the local data. Order a 4G SIM Card online here and pick it up in Bali.
If you want to go there, don’t forget to take care of your health before leaving and keep the environment clean wherever you are. Please don’t make the environment dirty or harm the nature.
